CASE STUDY No. 2

CLIENT: BRITISH ENERGY, SIZEWELL B NUCLEAR POWER STATION

APPLICATION:

NUCLEAR SAMPLING SUITE

PROBLEM:

Within the nuclear sampling units were drain pipes, which included a series of fittings prone to trapping residue which caused radiation hot spots. A system of lead bags was being used, but these were not entirely effective and looked untidy.

SOLUTION:

To reduce the areas of high radiation, Mazel designed and manufactured a series of custom moulded Radishield units supported by matching stainless steel support frames. An overall reduction in radiation levels was achieved by supplying a flush fitting curtain of Radishield flat sheets hung from a rail attached to the sampling units.

As a result of the Radishield system radiation levels were reduced by approximately a factor of 10 compared to the original shielding.
